Where to Eat Authentic New Mexican Food

We have an official state question here in New Mexico- Red or green? It’s in reference to which chlie you’d prefer smothered on your meal. There is no wrong answer. If you’re unsure, it’s always ok to order both on the side. If you have questions, ask your server. New Mexicans take pride in our unique flavors. Any local will be happy to steer you in the right direction.

Traditional foods here in New Mexico are influenced by the history of this diverse state. You’ll find Native American influences like roasted green chile, corn, and beans. You’ll see flavors introduced by the Spanish, such as cumin, oregano, and garlic. Other ingredients were brought by early Mexican settlers, including tomato, cilantro, and avocado. It all adds up to create a uniquely delicious cuisine. It has more spice than Tex-Mex. It’s heartier than Cali-Mex. It has significantly more melty cheddar cheese than Mexican food. What you’ll find in New Mexico are spicy, hearty meals that represent the many cultures that come together to make this place special.

It’s located less than half a mile from the Stay property, an easy walk or quick drive. Their menu is packed full of New Mexican favorites, whether you go to start your day with their breakfast burrito or end it with their brisket tacos (my personal favorite).

This is another neighborhood favorite, not far from the Stay property. You’ll enter through the shop and find the restaurant in the back left corner. They often have a short wait if you go at lunch time. But don’t worry, that’s my favorite excuse to browse in their super cute gift shop! They have a fun and unique variety of everything from cards to housewares to clothing and accessories.

As a lifelong Albuquerque resident, this one is my personal favorite. This place serves up my ultimate comfort foods. Their chile con queso and green chile are, in my opinion, the BEST!

This is the place to go if it’s patio weather! They have the biggest and most beautiful patio I’ve ever seen at a restaurant. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy some authentic New Mexican dishes.

At the end of your meal, many New Mexican restaurants include sopapillas. They’re little pockets of dough that have been deep fried. The best way to eat it is to bite the corner off, then drizzle honey inside. Just writing this, I’m feeling a little jealous that there are people who still get to enjoy a sopapilla for the first time! I hope you love it as much as I do!
